Fiesta MarketPlace coming to Fiesta Mall

Don't call it a swap meet. Fiesta MarketPlace is taking over the old Service Merchandise space at Fiesta Mall and turning it into an upscale, community focused shopping space with booths that can be rented for $400 a month.

Yet another great example of a creative reuse of an existing big-box space. Mesa truly has become a model for this type of reuse, which will be more and more common in the future as shopping centers reach their maturity and seek reinvention. They already have 50 vendors signed up, but are aiming for 100 before they open.

If everyone only took a small booth, they should already be taking in about $20,000 a month, which should hopefully go a long way in paying for the building, the electricity, and the improvements. It's nice to see people looking for creative ways to revitalize the Fiesta mall area.

While Councilman Kavanaugh is right that the area will need creative zoning and different uses to secure long-term viability, in this current real-estate market and economic environment, even adding more retail is a move in the right direction.

There is going to have to be a large visionary effort to revitalize the Fiesta area, and while we may be revitalizing one piece of it here, this isn't going to create long-term economic growth.

I'd like to see what the West Mesa groups have in store for revitalizing the rapidly declining Fiesta area. I don't think now with Tempe Marketplace and Mesa Riverview that the Fiesta area can support the retail that it previously supported. There needs to be another solution.

What have MCC leaders said about this? Would the Fiesta area fit in any broader MCC plans?

I think the area CAN become a great place and urban setting. Problem is, the city did a poor job in allowing the creativity of the company that came in and absolutely did nothing in the Fiesta District. It was a waste of money and poor city leadership and vision cause this. I liked the people, but the document they produced was poor and lacked everything.

One of the problems is, the city wants a document to tell them how to do it step by step and do not communicate it to the client. The city has BIG expectations, but do not provide or pay for it. They have Champaign taste with a PB&J budget. It does not work.

Zoning is not just the thing that needs to be changed, but an innovative vision needs to be done in this area. If not, you are going to get these small infill stores that only last a certain amount of time and than store fronts will be empty again.

Ideas are great, but paint the picture that tells the story of how this area can look like. Look at the weaknesses in why it is not going to develop in this way and how do you encourage the vision to happen?

IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE MARKETPLACE WOULD OFFER A NUMBER OF SMALLER BOOTHS SO VENDERS THAT HAVE SMALLER ITEMS AND DON'T NEED A 10X10 SPACE CAN BE SERVICED.
