Spirit Airlines coming to Gateway

Allegiant Airlines now has a neighbor as Spirit Airlines announced new service to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport today. This is more great news for the former Air Force base as it lives a second life as a commercial airport and a hub for science and development.

The move also sets up some competition for Allegiant as both airlines will offer service from Mesa to Las Vegas. This will hopefully push comepetition at Sky Harbor Airport as well, driving the prices of the U.S. Air and Southwest flights back down to more reasonable levels.

This is another big step to help Gateway develop into a major reliever airport similar to the ones you see surrounding LAX. More airlines will help the Gateway airport expand and attract more passengers.

Oakland A's Approached Mesa

Great opinion piece in the Arizona Republic about how the Oakland A's could help fill the space at Hohokam. The biggest takeaway from the article is the fact that Oakland approached Mesa and not the other way around. Indeed, it would be ideal to attract another team from Florida and make it an even 16 here in the valley.

We believe that will eventually happen. However, that may be a few years down the road. Until that time, the focus is going to be on the teams in town - specifically the A's and the Brewers who train in Phoenix. Both are looking to move, and in all likelihood, both will move out of Phoenix. So, there is likely to be some "stealing" talk out there.

That is why it is important to establish early that the A's came to Mesa. The City didn't go out shopping. Hopefully, this will turn out well and Mesa will have two teams generating revenue and attracting tourists. However, like the editorial says, if this strikes out, there is still a chance to attract a team from Florida.

Oakland A's Negotiating with Mesa

Great news! It looks like there is a chance that Hohokam won't sit very long without a tenant. The Oakland A's announced today that they have opened negotiations to move in when the Cubs leave for their new facility. Nothing is formal at this point, but it does give Oakland the ability to negotiate exclusively with Mesa.

There is a chance that the Cubs would move out after the 2013 season and the A's wouldn't move in until 2015. However, the year gap might be helpful for any moving and rennovations. Between the ASU move to the Cubs facility and this news, Mesa is definitely on the winning end of some major sports victory that will help bring revenue and people into the City.

This leaves Phoenix with only one team - the Brewers who play in Maryvale. Most people believe that it is only a matter of time before they move as well. That would leave Phoenix with no teams and Mesa with two!

This is more great news for Mesa.

Republic has a new system

The Arizona Republic has a new publishing system and not everyone is happy about it. It also appears that they will be employing a new commmenting system as well which will be interesting to see what it does to the tenor of the dialogue.

As we know, the newspapers have turned to make the stories more and more extravagant because it gets people tune in and argue within the comments and more people to pass the story around. More return commenters and people seing a story means more ad views which means increased ad sales.

A national journalist recently said reporters and talk show hosts "don't have to be right, they just have to be interesting." That is why you get so many stories about illegal immigration, mormonism, and the like. People have heated opinions. That is also why there was so much attention on the Pearce recall. It was a polarizing topic with two heated sides and the flames were fanned by the media selling ad space.

We're guessing that the biggest winners in the whole battle is the media sales guys who just saw their christmas bonus go up.

Republic: February debate really a better deal for Mesa

Like we said last week, there is a lot to be excited about moving the Mesa Presidential Debate to February. Our argument about the relevance in relation to "Super Tuesday" is front and center in this editorial from the the Arizona Republic Southeast Valley editorial board

They make two good points that we hadn't mentioned before: 1) the extra time to plan. 2) the marketing of Mesa to cold weather areas. Both are great points which will help the debate be a better community event and put Mesa in an even more favorable light.

This is a great opportunity for Mesa to shine.

Change in climate?

The recall defeat of Russell Pearce has people wondering if there is an impending change in the political climate.  From the article, people have jumped to several conclusions including the surge of the latino vote, the rejection of the tea party, a statement against negative politics, a shift in the view on immigration, a call for a change in the primary process - the list goes on and on.

The fact is, there is a large number of factors and outcomes that will come from the that election. The difference is, the change isn't from the election, it will be from what people do with this election.

As we said before, the Democrats are going to use that election as the rallying cry to mount their comeback.  You can see that again within the article where the Democrat party chairman see's this vote as "a sign."  In fact, Democrats issued a memo outlying their plans for next year and how they are going to use their win as a spring board.

Don't be surprised if Mesa is part of their plan - especially with parts of West Mesa currently being drawn in the new downtown Phoenix "competitive" district that the Democrats have their eyes on.

Save the diving lady!

The effort to restore the neon "diving lady" to the Starlite Motel in downtown Mesa is still about $20,000 short. The icon was damaged a little over a year ago in a heavy storm. Now, the Mesa Preservation Foundation group is taking the restored neon pieces on tour to help raise funds.

There are many things that have changed over the years here in Mesa, but we should find ways to maintain our tradition. Though we were never huge fans of trying to save the train in pioneer park, this icon is something that should be preserved.

Mesa Presidential Debate pushed back to Feb 22

It was announced yesterday that the Presidential Debate to be held at the Mesa Arts Center has been moved from November 30th to February 22nd. At this point, it is not clear on how big of an impact it will have in putting Arizona's issues on the national stage.

On the bright side, this gets the Mesa debate out of the mass of debates that has created a bit of fatigue out there. On the disappointing side, many Arizona voters will have already voted by early ballot by the time the debate takes place.

Based on the back and forth nature of the race so far, this debate has the potential to be incredibly important - taking place two weeks prior to "Super Tuesday" which happens on March 6th (see the schedule). The ideal scenario is that the debate could come down to two (or potentially three) candidates who have split the Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida primaries and are going head to head to build momentum coming out of Arizona and into Super Tuesday.

There is a slight possibility that the race has already been determined by February 22nd. If that's the case, this move would be a disappointment but would still put be a great opportunity to showcase the Mesa Arts Center and what else Mesa has to offer.

Democrats begin to mount comeback

A year ago, it looked as if Democrats across the state and across the nation were down and out. They lost every statewide office and had record losses in the legislature. It seemed that the Democrat victories of 2008 were quickly eroded by a Republican tidal wave - headed by the tea party. Now, it appears that the pendulum to begun the swing back.

Nationally, Democrats made gains at the ballot box and in the issue department, hailing the repeal of a collective bargaining ban in Ohio and a strict abortion ban in Mississippi. Locally, Democrats made gains in both Phoenix and Tucson, the state's two largest cities. They also cheered the successful recall of Russell Pearce.

With these wins, we wonder if they will return to their efforts to make inroads in Mesa. For those who haven't done the math yet, Mesa is now the largest city with Republican mayor and elections are up next year. In addition, the Democrats have already threatened a recall election on Rich Crandall (see also Vote Dem).

Don't be surprised if its a concerted effort to increase participation and help Obama's efforts to win Arizona in 2012. As we said before:

"Don't be surprised if the GEMDEM group that was born out of the 2008 Presidential Election will be humming with activity when the 2012 election comes around. Don't think that Team Obama isn't already strategizing for his re-election, because they most certainly are."

Did Adams and Crandall endorse Jerry Lewis?

Well, it looks like Kirk Adams and Rich Crandall have endorsed Jerry Lewis in his run against Russell Pearce. Or have they? What they have done is tip-toe the fine line of the "non-endorsement" - bashing Pearce supporters but falling short of throwing their support behind Lewis.

Yesterday, Kirk Adams attacked Pearce supporters for their tactics. Setting aside for a moment the irony of Adams saying "Contrast and negative campaigning will always be part of politics" after just completeing a push poll against his opponent, the most interesting thing is that Adams attacks Pearce's supporters without attacking Pearce. Similarly, he defends Jerry Lewis - but doesn't offer up an endorsement.

Previously, Senator Rich Crandall took a similar approach decrying dirty politics in an editorial but came short of endorsing Lewis. However, yesterday, he complimented Adams on his stance and then grouped himself in with other who have and have not endorsed Lewis. Maybe this new aggressive tone is because there is a potential that Crandall may have to go head to head with Pearce.

So the question remains, did Adams and Crandall endorse Jerry Lewis? That's the beauty of the "non-endorsement." It allows them to sit on the fence and play to both sides.

Both Adams and Crandall have a problem. They both tout a track record on immigration that relies heavily on the passage of SB1070. On his website, Adams says, "As Speaker of the House, I passed SB 1070 and made resources available to defend it in the courts." On his website, Crandall says, "I am very disappointed that the Obama Administration decided to sue Arizona to stop SB 1070" and goes on to talk about how he will defend the bill.

Who was the champion of SB1070? Russell Pearce.

So, Adams and Crandall don't want to risk their immigration cred so instead, they decry "dirty politics" and other platitudes which help Lewis but in their mind "technically" keep them neutral in the race.

Mesa Lands Presidential Debate November 30

Great News. Mesa has landed the Republican Presidential Debate slated to be held in Arizona on November 30th. This is a great opportunity to showcase the Mesa Arts Center and what else Mesa has to offer.

As we said before, Mesa is the bedrock of Republican conservatism in the valley and much more likely to vote for any of the GOP nominees than Tempe or Phoenix. It is welcome news that Governor Brewer and Republican leaders realized that fact.

Mesa has received national attention in recent years, with Obama making a speech as well as McCain/Palin. Here is hoping that this can bring even more positive attention to the City and allow the nation to understand some of the major issues facing the southwest including: immigration, housing, mortgages, healthcare, transportation needs, and changes in business and development.

Similarly, we still maintain that the federal government could learn a thing or two about balancing their budget by following Mesa's lead.

Changes coming to Mesa

This extended economic slowdown means that more changes are coming to Mesa. This doesn't necessarily mean bad news. As we have said in the past, Mesa has found a lot of creative ways to reuse and reinvent shopping centers and other underused buildings. Let's hope this trend continues.

First, the Broadway Palm theater will soon make some changes. Struggling to compete with other venues including the Mesa Arts Center, the theater is looking for ways to attract customers and survive. Part of the challenge is that it is anchoring a shopping center that is also struggling. So which comes first, the theater goers who become shoppers or the shoppers who become theater goers?

Also, here is an update on the Fiesta District. The ofter talked about district still have several plans in the works, though as we have said before, the "branding effort" has been less than impressive. Sadly, the high end condos that were explored have completely evaporated and will be replaced with a police station. The financial savings is good for the taxpayers, but won't add to the "vibe" like the condos would have. There is still work to be done on the Fiesta District, but it looks like everyone is keeping their eye on the ball.

Kirk Adams Launches "Push" Poll

Yesterday, we mentioned that we heard from someone that there was a poll going around promoting Kirk Adams. We asked about it yesterday on twitter and have since received confirmation from two other sources who were also called with the pre-recorded survey.

All three reports are virtually the same. They reported receiving an auto-poll paid for by the Kirk Adams campaign asking a series of questions. Here is the general order:

- Are you likely to vote in the race for Congress?
- Who are you going to vote for: Kirk Adams or Matt Salmon?
- Knowing that Matt Salmon has not lived in AZ the past several years but in DC as a lobbyist, does this change your opinion of him?
- Now, knowing this information, who are you going to vote for: Kirk Adams or Matt Salmon?
- What is your age?
- What is your gender?
- What is your religious affiliation?

A "push poll" is described as "a form of telemarketing-based propaganda and rumor mongering, masquerading as a poll." Do you see the push poll question tucked right there in the middle? The Adams campaign has been trying to promote the lobbyist issue for awhile, but now they are taking it to a new level by broadcasting it in the form of a "poll." Are they seriously trying to label Matt Salmon as some sort of carpet-bagger? Didn't he grow up in Mesa?

So the question is: why are they doing this? Is it because fundraising isn't as going as well as they had hoped? Are they trying to put out survey "results" that show the race is closer than the 30 point lead that Salmon announced? Do they think something like this would actually work?

Another question: what value will they find in the religious affiliation question. How is that going to impact this race?

We are still 10 months from this election, if Adams is already doing this, where does he go next?

It's Official - Randy Parraz supports Jerry Lewis

The group that paid for the Russell Pearce recall are now spending money to help get Jerry Lewis elected. The recall group, spearheaded by Randy Parraz, spent $6,500 to help Lewis, after spending an undisclosed sum to place Pearce on the ballot.

And that, in a nutshell, is the problem.

Jerry Lewis just can't escape Randy Parraz. We have said from the beginning that he would be taking on the recall baggage. Lewis has tried to keep the group at arm's length and disassociate himself with the recall effort. Time and again, he has decried the recall and said that he is running for the "right reasons."

Everyone looked the other way while the recall committee cleared the way for a one on one for Lewis against Pearce. It's going to be harder for them to look away when the committee starts spending money to directly support Lewis.

Someone in Congress is Interested in Mesa Part 2

Just like that, we here at Mesa Issues received a visit from an old friend. Three visits in fact. All it took was a story about Jeff Flake failing to represent his district, and suddenly, the U.S. House of Representatives is visiting the website. See for yourself.

Now, there is no guarantee that these visits are in fact from Flake's congessional office, but the last time we had regular visits from that domain was when we were writing about Flake's brother, Kevin Gibbons (see Someone in Congress is Interested in Mesa).

Since Flake has spent very little time in Mesa and even less time talking to constituents, perhaps reading blogs should be considered the next best thing.

Jeff Flake Fails Aerospace in Arizona

Experts say that the state needs a coordinated effort to expand and be competitive in the aerospace industry. We agree that more can be done to bring people together for a coordinated strategy to help use all of the tools available to help Mesa and the State be a national leader in aerospace and defense. With Mesa taking over the Air Force Research lab and the Arizona Aerospace Institute at Gateway, the pieces are there to make a strong effort.

However, there is one part of the article that seemed far off base. In the article, one of the experts claimed, "We have not done a good job coordinating with our federal delegation." They claim that the failure is in not keeping the congressional delegation "in the loop." The reality is, Mesa doesn't really have congressional representation in Washington.

Jeff Flake's "hands-off" approach to serving his constituents natually leaves him out of the loop. He is not concerned with helping anyone in his district and wouldn't engage in any coordinated effort to participate in bringing aerospace to Arizona for fear it might besmirch his "no pork" reputation. Therefore, the result is that state and local leaders are forced to go it alone or seek help from other members of Congress. The result from the outside is that local leaders are keeping congress at arms length when, in fact, the absolute reverse is true.

As we have said before, Jeff Flake is the reason that Arizona is a donor state. Flake’s crusade against earmarks all but guarantees that Arizona remains a donor state. Like sending money to Washington and only getting 80% back to Arizona? Then, Flake is your guy. He has been asked to support Arizona businesses and projects – and time and again he hides behind his anti-earmark stance. When was the last time you heard Jeff Flake talking about jobs, helping the State out in the Medicaid fight with the federal government of defending the State against attacks from the left on immigration? That’s right, Jeff Flake is a libertarian. That’s fine, but that’s not what we need in the US Senate. He has not done a single thing to bring a job to Arizona.

Democrat Groups Take Aim at Pearce - Support Lewis

The Sonoran Alliance has the latest post card to hit LD18 mailboxes reminding voters that Cortes is off the ballot. It looks suspiciously like an "official" piece of communication from the clerk, but if you look closely, you find that it is actually from "Citizens United for Progress."

That same group is already under fire for failing to file the appropriate disclosures. Their previous work has already been called "deceptive" and now they are sending out mail that looks official. See for yourself:

From the Arizona Republic - "Cactus League stalwart Robert Brinton, who helped cement the Chicago Cubs' future in Mesa and played a pivotal role in the league's survival and growth into a top tourism draw, died unexpectedly Friday."

Make sure to read the entire article. It is really amazing what this man meant to the Cactus League and to Mesa. It is tragic that he was so instrumental in helping the Cubs stay in Mesa and now he won't be around to see them move into the new facility.

Occupy Mesa?

This first one is from a protest back in March. Notice that his sign is very anti-Republican.

Now, check out this second picture, here is the same guy at the Occupy Phoenix march last week. You can't miss that trademark cowboy hat. And do you see who is next to him? A Jerry Lewis supporter. A Jerry Lewis supporter standing side by side with the anti-Republican protestor.

What's next an Occupy Mesa rally? It is clear that the anti-Republican, anti-Pearce crowd is behind the recall. Now they have turned their support to Jerry Lewis.

Meanwhile, Jerry Lewis is trying to paint himself as a conservative Republican, but he can't separate himself from those backing the recall. We would doubt very many LD 18 voters marched in the Occupy Phoenix parade.

Who is behind the Russell Pearce recall?

The mystery continues. First, the voters of LD18 have no real idea who paid for the recall of Russell Pearce in the first place. While Jerry Lewis tries to separate himself from Randy Parraz, there is no real way that he can as long as the recall backers remain in the shadows.

Now, another (or the same, who knows) recall group is using a front to attack Russell Pearce with campaign mailers. The group "Citizens United for Progress" is supporting Lewis and attacking Pearce - but it turns out they may not have filed the appropriate disclosures. If this was against Pearce backers, this would be a multi-day story. Since it favors Lewis, watch it fade away quickly.

Taxpayers protected in Cubs Deal

The Arizona Republic is complimenting the City of Mesa for their handling of the Cubs deal and their efforts to protect the taxpayers. It is indeed a good deal that will keep the Cubs in Mesa for at least the next 30 years and perhaps even 20 more. Fifty years from now, who knows what Spring Training will look like, but for now, one of the city's largest economic engines is staying put.

The editorial couldn't help itself but put in a parting shot about the Riverview shopping complex across the street. For some reason, the media likes to put down Riverview while praising Tempe Marketplace which basically put most of Mill Avenue out of business. The question is, would the Cubs stadium be at Riverview if not for the shopping center? The largest complaint about Hohokam (besides that its next to a cemetary) is the fact that there is no retail nearby. Without Riverview, the closest retail would be in Tempe. Keeping the Cubs money in Mesa should be our biggest priority and with that, the Cubs deal makes the Riverview deal even better.

Release: Jerry Lewis is Failing Our Kids

Mesa, AZ – Today, Senator Russell Pearce’s campaign responded to his political opponent’s assertion that he is a “school reformer.”
The Arizona Department of Education recently released their evaluations for Arizona’s schools. Under their new “A-F School Accountability Letter Grade System,” two schools that Jerry Lewis manages are receiving only a “C” and “D” grade.

It is important to note that according to Wednesday’s Arizona Republic, the new grading "formula puts more weight on how much students improve and less on their level of performance".

The two schools that received such poor improvement grades under Jerry’s “reform” include the Children’s First Academy of Tempe (C grade) and Children’s First Academy of Phoenix (D grade).
Under this system a “failing” school is given a “D” grade when it is actually failing during the grading period. Only after three “D” grades in consecutive grading periods is the school actually assigned an “F”.

“Jerry Lewis runs around the district talking about his record of improving
schools. However, this report tells a different story,” stated Chad Willems, Pearce’s campaign manager.

Willems continued, “Interestingly, the Tempe school is the same one in which Jerry Lewis admitted he stole donated items for homeless children and gave to a friend to sell at a garage sale. Perhaps Jerry took more than just donated clothes and an entertainment center for the homeless kids. Looks like he stole their schoolbooks too.”

Resort coming to Riverview

It's first come first served to the spot near the new Cubs spring training facility. Waveyard is still given a chance to use the property, but now they have some competition. Motivated competition at that - if the Cubs can attract a resort, they will get more time to develop their Wrigleyville concept. While we hope that Wrigleyville happens sooner as opposed to later, its good to see that Mesa is doing what it can to drive amenties near the ballpark.

Early Voting Starts today

Early voting starts today in the LD 18 recall race. The Arizona Republic seems content to squeeze every last bit of juice out of this story by keeping it on the front pages. This time, its an indepth look at the changing demographics of LD18.

What is interesting is that the face of the District will change again with the upcoming redisticting process. In fact, next fall, Senators Pearce and Crandall may end up in the same district with Lewis on the outside looking in. You think that Pearce vs. Lewis has been contentious - imagine what Pearce vs. Crandall would look like.

Senator Crandall is almong the handful of legislators who have not stood up in support of Pearce because Pearce supported Crandall's opponent in the Primary. Crandall's former LD19 seatmate Former Speaker Kirk Adams has also failed to appear on the list of those supporting Pearce - raising questions from fellow lawmakers.

Cubs update

A lot of news coming from the Chicago Cubs organization. First, it looks like they have a new General Manager.

Second, the City of Mesa has released the agreements for the spring training facilities and the deal surrounding the Wrigleyville development. The Wrigleyville portion agreements are very interesting in that they give the Cubs ownership the first crack at developing the areas around the stadium. However, they are set as such that they won't be able hold it indefinitely without developing it.

So, unlike some of the other new stadiums which are smack in the middle of undeveloped areas, hopefully this means there will be stuff to do surrounding the stadium in a relatively short amount of time.

Recall Election Update

Just as we predicted, the Russell Pearce recall has taken center stage this month with both sides going back and forth over several issues. In fact, the Arizona Republic has taken the time to profile both candidates on the front page of the Valley and State section with Jerry Lewis yesterday and Russell Pearce today.

That, of course, didn't stop them from issuing an endorsement before the profiles had been completed. In what should be a surprise to no one, the Republic has endorsed Jerry Lewis. Has the Arizona Republic ever endorsed Russell Pearce?

Lewis, however, has a few troubles of his own. In addition to trying to separate himself from the likes of Randy Parraz, Lewis must also content with allegations that he was taking items intended for homeless kids and giving them away for personal gain. He also compared Arizona to "Alabama 1964" which you can draw your own conclusions about.

Less than two weeks ago, Governor Brewer announced that Arizona will be home to a GOP debate on December 1st. The location has yet to be determined, but one could guess that they are probably leaning towards somewhere like Gammage in Tempe or some place downtown. Our question is, why not Mesa? Mesa is the bedrock of Republican conservatism in the valley and much more likely to vote for any of the GOP nominees than Tempe or Phoenix.

Obama and the Democrats get that, that is why they come to Mesa time and again. Will the GOP leaders be smart enough to follow suit or will they take Mesa for granted?

PHOENIX – Governor Jan Brewer announced Thursday that an agreement has been reached with CNN for the network to produce a major debate in Arizona featuring candidates seeking the Republican nomination for president in 2012.

The nationally-televised debate will be conducted and aired at 6 p.m. local time (8 p.m. ET) on December 1.

“I’ve been in politics a long time, but I can’t remember a more critical election than this,” said Governor Brewer. “When it comes to some of the hallmark issues facing our country – whether illegal immigration, the housing crisis or the ongoing power struggle between the states and federal government – Arizona is at the forefront. These are national issues, certainly. But Arizonans live and breathe them.

“So, I’m thrilled that the Arizona Republican Party and CNN have reached agreement on a debate, and optimistic that when the candidates come to Arizona, they’ll meet our voters and offer meaningful solutions to the problems facing our state and nation.”

CNN’s participation ensures that the Arizona presidential debate will be viewed worldwide, thanks to the global, 24/7 reach of CNN and CNN.com. The debate will be aired live from Arizona on CNN, and globally on CNN International, CNN en Espanol and CNN Radio.

“Arizona is a key state that will play a pivotal role in helping Republicans choose their presidential nominee,” said Sam Feist, CNN Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. “CNN is honored to provide voters in Arizona and around the country an opportunity to hear the GOP candidates present their vision for the future.”

CNN is highly-respected for its political coverage, and in 2008 won a Peabody Award – the highest honor in television journalism – for its presidential primary coverage, including production of debates. CNN has already hosted two Republican presidential debates this year, partnering with WMUR television and the New Hampshire Union Leader in June and the Tea Party Express earlier this month.

Preparations are ongoing for Arizona’s Republican presidential debate, including the selection of an appropriate venue to host the festivities. The State of Arizona will incur no costs as part of the production of this event.

The video looks very pretty, but we aren't really sure what it says. A guy running for Congress likes the Constitution and the American flag? You don't say!

It also looks like they have a few kinks to work out because the astute folks over at Seeing Red noticed that his video also builds Name ID for his opponent Chuck Gray. Oops!

Jerry Lewis enters race against Russell Pearce

About two weeks ago, there was speculation that those who oppose Russell Pearce had found someone to run against him. Turns out they found their man and his name is Jerry Lewis. There are two others in this race, who may turn out to be potential spoilers, but in the end this race really boils down to Lewis vs. Pearce.

We still wonder if he knows what he is getting into, but at this point, hopefully someone sat him down and told him how this kind of race was going to be. Well, there is already a little bit of trouble to contend with. Jerry Lewis admitted that he voted for Kevin Gibbons in 2008 and for a write in for 2010.

So, its clear that this guy has been voting against Pearce for awhile now. No matter how friendly he acts or how much he tries to hug Pearce, his track record says otherwise. He is using this special opportunity to take out someone he doesn't like and he doesn't agree with. Remember that when he starts talking about how much he respects Pearce.

Another question: did he write Kevin Gibbons in again, or someone else in 2010? You may recall that Kevin Gibbons was Jeff Flake's brother-in-law who ran against Pearce in 2008. Gibbons was a lawyer who ran "Immigration without barriers" and was backed by the people who pushed a bogus employer sanctions initiative which would actually weaken the law. So, are those the same types of people who are going to line up behind Lewis?

This is going to be an interesting race. With very little else going on this November, the eyes of Arizona (and other parts of the country) will be on this race.

Born on June 23, 1947 as one of thirteen children in Mesa, Senator Russell Pearce is a fifth-generation Arizonan on both his mother's and his father’s side. His family has long served the public interests of Arizona and its people. His Great, Great Grandfather Harrison Pearce built the Pearce Ferry on Lake Mead. His Great Grandfather James Pearce founded Taylor Arizona in the 1860’s. His Great Uncle Joe Pearce was one of the original Arizona Rangers serving from 1901-1909.

Pearce’s youth was tough. His family was poor and his father was an alcoholic without a steady job which caused the family to move from one squalid rental home to another. Pearce recalled in an Arizona Republic article that his father “was a good man, but he was very weak. He wasn’t the kind of dad, or husband he should have been. Pearce describes his mother as “a saint”. He does not ever remember going to bed she was not still up working or getting up that she was not already up working. Her integrity, do-it-yourself attitude, and sense of personal responsibility influenced Pearce’s core political beliefs. In an Arizona Republic article Pearce recounts how as a child, upon returning home one afternoon with his family, they discovered groceries left by a good Samaritan. Despite the helpful and necessary gift, Pearce’s mother refused to let her children touch the groceries, explaining, “it was her job to raise her family”. Consistent with that belief, though they could have used the help, his mother “never took a penny from government or anybody else.”

Does Pearce challenger know what he is getting into?

Channel 12 is reporting that a challenger has been found to run against Russell Pearce in the LD 18 Recall Election. What is interesting is Channel 12 characterized his potential run as "a product of a search by Mesa residents." See for yourself.

That doesn't really appear to be true. This recall election is the product of Pearce opponents who do not like his policies. How is that the appropriate use of a recall election? Isn't that what regularly scheduled elections are for? How is this not considered some sort of trickery?

More to the point, is anyone who would be willing to face Pearce ready to handle all of the baggage that comes with this recall? Thoughts on Mesa did a good job exposing the recall committee, but the bigger point is, no matter how "conservative" the candidate is, he or she is going to have to defend the records of the people who made this election happen.

By default, whoever runs against Pearce stands with Randy Parraz. How is a conservative mormon going to stand with Parraz who is ardent supporter of gay marriage? Not even civil unions, mind you, Parraz wants full fledged gay marriage.

Didn't the church actively promote marriage amendments in California and Arizona?

How is a candidate going to talk tough on immigration, when his supporters are proponents of the DREAM act?

How is the candidate going say that he is a fiscal conservative when his supporters have deep union connections?

There has been a lot of talk about who the ideal candidate would be to take on Pearce - they want a conservative, mormon male who is tough on immigration. Someone who can be "Pearce light" but without the national attention. The candidate will try to decry the recall and humbly say that they share the same values, just with a different approach.

The problem is their approach is all wrong because the recall is wrong. There will be no ability to do the "wrong" thing for the "right" reasons. To run in the recall election means you endorse what the recall election stands for. It means you endorse what the recall committee stands for. It means that you support trumping the election process and targetting people you don't agree with.

If you are wrong about the recall, how can you be trusted on anything else?

Pearce Recall moving forward

Looks like the recall of Russell Pearce is moving forward. Seems like more and more these days, recall has become the weapon of those who cannot find a way to agree. In this case, they are basically recalling the Senate President because they don't agree with his policies on immigration.

Isn't that what regular elections are for? Now, instead the taxpayers are on the hook for a special election. If the recall fails, the committee should be on the hook like they do with frivolous law suits.

So now, the question is, who will be brave enough to run against Russell Pearce? This is going to be a very divisive race, and we predict that the media will place a lot of attention on it because it will be one of the only things going on. Expect a series of articles on Pearce in their typical unflattering style.

Perhaps its time to bring back the bloggers round table like we did back during Pearce vs. Gibbons.

Thoughts on Mesa has an interesting post on the Adams/Salmon race that is worth a read. Part of their update included a YouTube from a recent Adams fundraiser - the video has now been subsequently removed and then replaced. Here it is below:

Don't know all of the faces in this slide show, but we would guess this is more meant for insiders. At least we hope so, taking pictures at a fundraiser doesn't do much to give feeling of being "among the people." In the end, it looks like the "credits" at the end are the most important part of the video. They look conspiciously like endorsements wrapped up in a thank you.

This is more about the fact that it appears that the who's who of the East Valley are starting to divide on this one. It is starting to feel like an American Idol finale.

Update on the Pearce Recall

Once again, Thoughts on Mesa is keeping us up to date on the latest in the Pearce recall. Yesterday, they revealed that the Law Firm attacking Pearce has ties to Obama and the DNC.

Is anyone really surprised by this? We have been saying for awhile now that the Dems think that they can make inroads into West Mesa. However, with Mitchell being roundly beaten last year these hopes have taken a hit. Now, they finally realize that as long as Pearce is in the equation, they will never have a real chance. However, it is likely a fool's errand. They have to look no further than Kevin Gibbons to see how it turned out the last time.

Salmon Denounces President Obama’s Call for Israel to Return to Its Indefensible 1967 Borders
"As an ally it is wrong for us to advocate a policy that will jeopardize Israel’s security"

EAST VALLEY – Former Congressman Matt Salmon denounced President Obama’s proposal that Israel return to borders its famous former Foreign Minister Abba Eben, called "Israel’s Auschwitz line". Salmon says, "Until now, no US President has advocated Israel return to the 1967 borders – borders that the Prime Minister of Israel reiterated yesterday would put Israel’s security at risk. The President cannot say he will do nothing to undermine Israel’s security and then advocate a policy that the Prime Minister of Israel says would undermine Israel’s security."

Yesterday, President Obama outlined a Palestinian state based on Israel’s borders before the 1967 Six Day War, requiring Israel to give up control over all of East Jerusalem including the holiest sites of the Jewish people – the Temple Mount and the Western Wall. The President made clear in his speech that were Israel to try to retain these historical Jewish sites, Israel would have to give up land that has existed from Israel’s creation in 1949. Such a position has never before been advocated by a sitting U.S. President.

Salmon said, "It’s astonishing that the President is suggesting something that would break the written commitment given to Israel in 2004 by President Bush that specifically indicated that Israel could keep at least some of the territory that Israel won in the defensive 1967 war, territory that Israel vitally needs for its security. "This move not only puts Israel’s security at risk, it hurts U.S. interests as well."

Salmon continues, "President Obama is also doing it at a time when the Palestinian Authority has formed a union with the Bin Laden supporting Hamas. Such a policy thus destroys the momentum achieved by putting the terrorists on the defensive after the killing of Bin Laden. Telling a U.S. ally, Israel, to give more land to a Bin Laden supporting entity is just flat out wrong."

Salmon has been a long-time, strong supporter of a safe and secure Israel. When he was in Congress in 1999, at the time First Lady Hillary Clinton called for the establishment of a Palestinian State. Salmon then pushed a bill through the House that Congress would never recognize a Palestinian state unless our ally Israel agreed to it first.

Salmon concluded, "The day after the bill passed, Israel’s then-Prime Minister Netanyahu personally phoned me and told me I was a statesman and a hero for Israel."

Arizona Highway Patrol Association to Honor 28 DPS Officers Killed in Line of Duty with Memorial Ceremony

(Phoenix, AZ) –The men and women of the Arizona Highway Patrol Association (AHPA) will pay their respects to 28 Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers who were been killed in the line of duty. The Annual AHPA Police Officer Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for today at DPS’ main headquarters in Phoenix.

It is relieving to AHPA that they will not be adding another name to the memorial this year. However, other police agencies in Arizona, and countrywide, have recently experienced the loss of a hero. The names of 316 fallen police officers are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. In 2010, officer fatalities increased over 40% nationwide from the year before. In Arizona alone, law enforcement experienced a 500% increase in police deaths. Yesterday, the community lost a Buckeye police officer that was killed during an altercation.

Governor Janice Brewer, DPS Director Robert Holliday and AHPA President Jimmy Chavez will speak at the ceremony. Special performances by aviation professionals, Miss Arizona Kathryn Buckley, the Arizona music group Arrowheart and law enforcement bagpipers will add powerful sounds and visuals to the commemorative day. This annual memorial, that arrives one week before the nationally recognized Police Memorial Week, not only honors the officers, but also the sacrifices of their families. Breaking down Jeff Flake's first commercial

Jeff Flake has already launched his first commercial for US Senate. Here it is below:

As we mentioned before, he is going to have a few problems with his bid, none of which he really addresses here. His commercial starts with blury pictures of Arizona before going to a crystal clear shot of Washington DC. Which seems more in focus?

Then later, he does a far away picture of Phoenix with a quote that says "Conservative's Conservative" which you would think would be from an Arizona newspaper, but no, its from the Dallas Morning News... and its from five years ago. The same Dallas Morning News that has opposed the effort in Texas to pass an Arizona style law.

His next kudos comes from Arizona, right? Wrong. It comes from the New York times calling him a true reformer. We looked and the only instance we can find of that appears to be said by David Brooks, who is a huge Obama fan and penned a column called "Run Barack Run." Isn't his commercial titled, "Run Jeff Run?"

"Run Jeff Run" is also a quote in the commercial from the Club for Growth. They're from Arizona, right? Nah, they are a PAC in Washington. But their conservative right? Yes, but they still don't fix Flake's fundamental immigration problem. In fact, Tancredo takes aim at them as pro-amnesty libertarians. What about Flake's contributions from Nathan Sproul?

Finally at the 39 second mark, we get a quote from the Arizona Republic. From 2007. Has he done anything in the past few years? The quote says, "A national symbol of that commitment to principal." That quote comes from this Robert Robb opinion talking about Flake getting the boot from the Judiciary Committee basically for being an idealogue. While that might be attractive to some, is that really what Arizona wants? Someone so committed to principle that they are brushed out of the way?

The commercial ends with the same pictures Flake has used the last few times around in front of some barn which clearly is not in Mesa. It is fitting really, since he hasn't really done much for Mesa anyway.

What happens in the CD 6 race?

Now that Flake has officially launched his campaign for Senate, including his first commercial, the new question for Mesa is what will happen in the race for CD6?

There have been some pretty interesting lists and stories floating around, so let's take a look and see what is out there.

First, there has been a lot of speculation that Speaker Kirk Adams will seek this seat. It appears that he has been eyeing it for some time with his push for the jobs package and pension reform. If the jobs package passes in this special session, would that be enough to solidify his chances? Would he try to stay in the legislature - a tactic that has provided mixed results for other candidates?

Second, another legislative leader who is rumored to be considering a run would be Senate President Russell Pearce. Would he even run against the other candidates or would he simply run against Jeff Flake's record? Pearce could hit two birds with one stone with that tactic, winning himself a seat and costing Flake his race. On the plus side, he could take his illegal immigration message to the big stage. On the minus side, he'd lose his newfound power as President of the Senate. Would he resign to run?

Another name tossed about is Mesa Mayor Scott Smith who is considering a run. Smith is very popular and is credited with Mesa's turn around. On the other hand, he has been in office for only two years and hasn't built up as much cred, but he is well known in Mesa. Is he seasoned enough for this next step or is a race for re-election for Mayor more in order with an eye on the 2014 statewide races?

Former state senator Chuck Gray is apparently going to announce his bid for the seat tomorrow. If a tree falls in Mesa and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? This is the same guy who backed out of a contest with Rich Crandall?

Speaking of, Senator Rich Crandall is another name that is thrown about. Would he challenge Adams? What about Jeff Smith who challenged Flake last time around? Will he resurface as the tea party candidate again this time?

It is clear that the race for 2012 has already begun - almost 19 months before the election.

Five Reasons Why Jeff Flake Won’t Win

Just a few days after Senator Jon Kyl announced that he wouldn’t seek another term, Mesa Congressman Jeff Flake has thrown his hat into the ring to replace Kyl in the United States Senate. It was pretty much expected. Many have said that he has eyed that seat for a long time. First out of the gate, there are some already calling Flake the front-runner for the seat. The problem is: he won’t win.

While he is lauded as a fiscal hawk, the 2010 elections showed us what was really important to the voters of Arizona and there is simply no way that Flake will be able to secure the Republican nomination. Here are five reasons why Jeff Flake won’t win:

1. Jeff Flake is soft on illegal immigration. Voters view illegal immigration as one of the top issues facing the State of Arizona. Not only did Flake vote for “comprehensive immigration reform,” but he also helped the fast food crowd bankroll his brother in law, Kevin Gibbons, in a direct assault on Russell Pearce. Flake’s brother’s is an immigration attorney and his business was called “Inmigracion Sin Barreras” (Immigration without barriers). Flake is going to be tagged with the amnesty label right off the bat. If Russell Pearce doesn’t run himself and destroy Flake, he’ll back someone who will.

2. Jeff Flake voted to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” While this appeals to his libertarian sensibilities, we don’t see this one going over too well with the morally conservative crowd. In fact, it was a "huge disappointment." While he probably loved to see his name in the headlines in Washington DC, this scored him no primary points at home.

3. Jeff Flake is a globetrotting Washington DC insider. Flake has visited more foreign countries on the taxpayers dime than he has attended district meetings and met with other elected officials here in Arizona. Israel, Cuba, Napa Valley, Palm Beach... Let’s face it Jeff Flake does not like hard work, he would rather be on a desert island doing survival school all alone than visiting with fellow Republicans in Arizona. That’s why Flake has more grassroots appeal on a desert island than he does in Arizona.

4. Jeff Flake is the reason that Arizona is a donor state. Flake’s crusade against earmarks all but guarantees that Arizona remains a donor state. Like sending money to Washington and only getting 80% back to Arizona? Then, Flake is your guy. He has been asked to support Arizona businesses and projects – and time and again he hides behind his anti-earmark stance. When was the last time you heard Jeff Flake talking about jobs, helping the State out in the Medicaid fight with the federal government of defending the State against attacks from the left on immigration? That’s right, Jeff Flake is a libertarian. That’s fine, but that’s not what we need in the US Senate. He has not done a single thing to bring a job to Arizona.

5. Jeff Flake is not battle tested. Since his first campaign, he has not had a tough race. His first race he won by default when all of the other candidates tussled with one another and “Mr. Think Tank” stayed out of the fray. Remember a few years ago when there was a lot of handwringing at the thought of Matt Salmon challenging Flake for his old seat? Or remember when Team Flake put the hit out on Russell Pearce for thinking about challenging him? This time, it is a completely different game. Flake’s record speaks for itself. You want to change Washington, do it from the outside, on your own dime. You can’t change Washington from the inside. Electing Jeff Flake to reform the Government would be like asking Hosni Mubarak to reform his own government – get real, that’s just not going to happen.

Only time will tell who else jumps in this race, but its likely that Jeff Flake will not survey the GOP primary. Perhaps he should run as a libertarian – his true party affiliation.

Today is Election Day and it is critical that you make sure your voice is heard in this election. Here in Mesa, Proposition 420 is essential to keeping the Cubs in Mesa. Cubs bring in tourists, revenue, and have been part of Mesa tradition for decades. We can't afford to lose the Cubs to Florida or somewhere else in the valley. Make sure you get out and vote.

The Cubs have released their concepts of what the stadium would look like on the Riverview location. That topic, of course, has not been finalized yet, but you can see that the renderings are pretty amazing.

You can see the images and learn more at their website. The article has a lot more details about the project including the financial caps and where the money is coming from.

There have been some dicsussions about if Riverview is the best site or if somewhere else in East Mesa is preferable.

East Mesa proponents point to the potential of more money being spent in Mesa - what they fail to point out is the opposition in the Red Mountain area and the lack of development in the Gaylord area. We have been a fan of this concept in the past, but expect a free standing stadium in the middle of nowhere like Glendale and Goodyear for awhile.

Riverview is indeed closer to Tempe and Scottsdale. It is however, closer to Mesa retail than Hohokam ever was with development across the street in Mesa Riverview shopping center.

To be sure, there are pros and cons to both locations, but the Wrigleyville West concept is something that will be attractive in either locations. In reality, the best part about both of these sites is that they are in Mesa. It is critical that we keep the team in town. The details beyond that should be discussed with great interest, but we must be mindful of the ultimate goal here.

Cubs deal capped at $99 million

Mesa announced the more details surrounding the Cubs deal today including the announcement that the project hosts are hard capped at $99 million to the City. This announcement comes as more people were seeking details about the plan as early voting approaches.

Mesa and the Cubs revealed a term sheet explaining some of the main tenets of the deal including a $84 million for the facility and $15 million in infrastructure and park improvements making the total deal around $99 million - far less than the critics have been shouting from the rooftops.

Speaking of critics, the VBO has reared their ugly head saying that they oppose the deal (what else is new). Last year, we hailed their move to Gilbert, saying good riddance. Too bad they didn't stay gone. Ironically, they are complaining about Mesa's ballot language, which is written in accordance with the law that they wrote. Again, they are the reason why we must have an election every time the City has a project - which creates another step standing in the way of those who want to invest in our city.

Also, some more detail on the funding, which will come from the enterprise fund and the sale of land in Pinal County. This has nothing to do with the General fund. These details will be helpful in the last few weeks of the election to help assure voters that this isn't just a blank check.

This is a critical election to make sure that we are able to keep the Cubs in Mesa long term. Without the Cubs, what would Mesa have?

The Race for Congressional District 5

A little over a year ago, everything was looking great for the Democrats. At the time, we wondered if the Democrats were taking aim at Mesa to try to expand their influence. We also discussed how the frequent visits from the President and his cabinet could be seen as an attempt to appeal to Mesa or at the very least, give support to Congressman Harry Mitchell.

Now, a mere month prior to the election, it doesn't look like all the favors have made a lick of difference. In fact, with Obama's mounting unpopularity, it might even be part of what is reflecting poorly on Mitchell.

Its no secret that Harry Mitchell is in the fight of his life - and though he was given some flexibility to satisfy his conservative district, his votes on healthcare, the stimulus, and the bailouts may spell doom for him.

We have heard the phrase "enthusiasm gap" repeated time and again, but the reality is that its more like an enthusiasm canyon. We receive a lot of email from all over the East Valley and its difficult to tell how many tea parties there are, but we can say with certainty that there are far more tea party groups than democrat clubs. Mitchell's upset of Hayworth required Republicans who were sick of JD to cross the aisle. In this current environment, we don't see that happening.

Civic duty

Sorry Mayor Smith, but you can't get out of jury duty. Not that you don't deserve to - we very much appreciate your civic pariticpation, but the jury process is fairly set. He's right that they will probably let him go once he goes down there, but it is good to see that he is not above doing what he is supposed to do and let the process work.

In this day and age, elitism has crept into our elected officials (see President Obama), and they tend to forget that they are elected by the people and should live to the same standards as everyone else. Perhaps the President wouldn't be facing such mounting criticism if he followed the lead of local leaders. We also think that he would have been wise to follow Mesa's lead on balancing the budget instead of going down the road of overspending.

Sticking its nose in Mesa's business

The Goldwater Institute has, once again, stuck its nose into Mesa's business. This time they expressed concerns over the deal to keep the Cubs in Mesa.

When was the last time Goldwater Institute was actually for something? As much as conservatives claim to hate "big brother," the GI is about as close as you can come to a nanny organization trying to tell everyone what they can and can't do. They don't care about Mesa or Arizona really for that matter. Otherwise, they would try to be proactive in their policies instead of complaining about everything and suing when something doesn't go their way. Goldwater Institute is more like a law firm than a policy think tank.

At least their distribe was juxtaposed with a response from the Mesa Chamber, who, you know, actually represents Mesa businesses. The Chamber sets the record straight on the misinformation out there and discusses the financial benefits of the project. Most importantly, they actually realize that the Cubs are critical to Mesa's economy and long term economic growth, something that the naysayers seem to ignore.

In the end, we're prone to stick with the people from Mesa who actually care about this town over those professional naysayers who would almost rather sue someone over actually participating in a thoughtful policy discussion.

Cubs Update

Chicago Cubs fans are in for a treat as the Yes on 420 committee brings Ron Santo into town on Saturday, October 9th. Santo is a beloved Cubbie and one that many think should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Also, it looks like Cubs Team Chairman Tom Ricketts was in town to speak to the Rotary club. They don't appear too sure if a Cubs - Waveyard plan can work, but they are looking into it. Regardless, here is the key from the article:

"The stadium will cost $84 million, and the Ricketts family plans to invest additional money on a privately funded entertainment complex dubbed Wrigleyville West. The team will focus initially on the baseball components of the development and then start working on the entertainment portion, Ricketts said."

Unlike other ballparks across the valley, this plan has a built in retail component that is a successful concept and will be actually backed by the team. This is a smart investment to keep the Cubs in town and maximize revenue.

Gateway growth barriers

Just a day after we talked about Allegiant making great strides to improve business in the East Valley, we see this warning that Gateway needs some changes to continue to improve its image and customer experience.

The question remains, do you make the upgrades in hopes that it will attract more people or do you wait for more people to help rationalize the upgrades? Everyone recognizes that Gateway isn't Sky Harbor, but if they want to be a seen as a serious alternative, some of the improvements will be necessary.

Throughout the country, certain airports are often avoided because of their customer service problems, overall cleanliness or general layout. Gateway has a unique opportunity to be a solid mix of convenience, value, and simplicity. Its a model that Southwest airlines has done as a carrier, and Gateway could follow as an airport.

More on Cubs and Waveyard

The head of the Mesa CVB seems to think that the Cubs and Waveyard could share the site at Riverview. There has been some intrigue to this point, and he thinks that there would likely be enough land to house both. We're aren't as positive about the idea, but it is something that should be explored.

The result would shed a lot of the different components and leave Waveyard as whitewater rafting river, scuba lagoon and wave pool. It is not clear what other elements, if any, would stay, but it could make some families come and stay in town longer before or after the game. Who knows if it could work, but that is for Mesa, the Cubs, and Waveyard to determine.

One thing that is for certain is that it is critical for the Cubs to stay in Mesa. Our economy depends on sales tax revenues and spring training is a major contributor to keeping the revenue we have for public safety, streets, etc. We can't risk losing the Cubs to Florida or to some other city. So, if Waveyard is part of the equation, fine, but it shouldn't stand in the way of making sure to maximize on the financial impact that the Cubs can generate for Mesa.

Remembering sacrifice

While the war in Iraq might officially be "over," it is important to remember that there are those across the world who continue to fight each day to defend our freedom. Some pay the ultimate price.

Unfortunately, a Mesa soldier was recently killed in Afghanistan. Her story was accompanied by a slide show of Southeast Valley residents who have died in combat. It is important to remember these people and everyone who has served to keep this country safe.

Good news from Allegiant

Allegiant Air will be starting flights from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to Idaho Falls, Idaho starting November 12th. Just as there are many transpants from the midwest in the valley, there are also a lot Mesa residents who hail from the Idaho area.

This news comes a week or so after it was announced that Allegiant was expanding capacity by adding more seats to each plane.

It is good to see that some businesses are expanding and keeping the course in spite of the economy. As we start the economic comeback, we hope that there will be even more good news from the Gateway area and hope that they will be on the leading edge of recovery with businesses like Allegiant leading the way.

Waveyard or Not?

It looks like Riverview is the preferred location for the new Cubs facility leaving behind the downtown and the northeast locations. So, now the question remains: what to do about Waveyard?

Earlier this year, it looks like a Waveyard/Cubs project was proposed and rejected, but now it appears to be back on the table. The idea, while intriguing, does raise a lot of questions.

Waveyard was billed as a one of a kind destination unlike anything we have ever seen. Now, we're looking at something that is half the size? What will become of the surfing wavepool, scuba pool, white water rafting, the luxury hotel, condos, dining etc? If the thing can't be built without a ballpark, how are they supposed to get something done in Dubai or elsewhere? What does that do to their current agreement where they were supposed to buy all the land?

Second, where will the Cubs train? Isn't one of the biggest parts of this election about giving the Cubs a competitive training facility? Can that still be done in the smaller space? Can the stadium be big enough to compete with the other west valley stadiums if the land is shared?

It seems like there are two groups here that want to make full use of the land, but might be willing to take half of something over half of nothing. It doesn't hurt to explore this opportunity. However, at the end of the day, it is far more critical to keep the Cubs who are proven over something that still has not been able to get off the ground.

If they can work together, great. If not, Cubs have the far greater chance of success.

Tattoo suit dismissed

Over a year ago, Mesa rejected a tattoo parlor in the Dobson Ranch area. At the time, we discussed that a lawsuit was likely and there was a risk for it to turn into a disaster. It turns out that we were wrong.

The judge has dismissed the lawsuit and it appears that the issue is dead. The formal ruling as not released yet, so its not exactly clear what the judge was thinking, but unlike the Tempe issue, it doesn't appear that the Goldwater Institute or any other litigation-friendly thinktank jumped to the tattoo artist's aid.

Now, over a year and a half later, you have to wonder how much money was lost and if the business owner would have been better off to set up shop elsewhere.

Chinatown in Mesa

We have talked about Mekong Plaza before and how its a model for creative reuse for communities across the state. Now, the people behind that project are taking it a step further by expanding their food court and offering a wide variety of asian dining experiences.

From casual dining to sit down elegance, this looks like another opportunity to create jobs and attract shoppers and diners from other communities to the area. As they have seen it other areas, the result will hopefully attract other businesses and encourage improvement in the surrounding community.

Culture and diversity is something that Mesa has embraced and it can pay long term economic dividends improving our quality of life, increasing variety, and making the city more attractive for businesses looking to relocate.

Cubs update

There is a lot of Cubs news from over the past couple of days, so we have compiled it down to one update.

First, in the paper today, the Keep the Cubs committee has an editorial in the Arizona Republic today extolling the virtues of why the Cubs need to stay in Mesa. One of the most exciting pieces they mention is the Wrigleyville West concept. This built in retail plan which would attract visitors similar to the area around Wrigley field in Chicago. While it is easy to get lost in the mire of the site selection, we shouldn't overlook the fact that the development surrounding this project would be far more unique than any other spring training facility in the valley.

Speaking of the site selection, Mesa has released their study about the sites and the potential economic impact they may have. The only challenge is that they tested generic retail because they didn't have any specifics about the project. One could guess the kinds of stores, bars, and shops that would line up for Wrigleyville West, but without details, its hard to tell if they study really tells us anything.

It does, however, create good fodder for those who have their heart set on a specific site. Does downtown work or is it another case of allowing real estate to dictate planning? Does Riverview work or would it oversaturate retail? Does northeast Mesa work or are the neighbors against it? Each site has its challenges, but there is one thing that we must all agree on - regardless of the site, keeping the Cubs in Mesa is critical to Mesa's long-term economy.

Building a legacy

You may not think of them as "legacy" projects, but major programs like the Central, Arizona Project, the Salt River Project, the complettion of the I-10, and the creation of the other valley freeways have been critical to the growth and maturation of our community. In the midst of this economic slowdown, eyes have turned to the horizon for the next round of "legacy" projects which could define our economic success for many years to come.

Obviously, $25 billion is not easy to come by, but it is good news that there are already planners with vision of what we want our community to become instead of constantly managing what we already have. From a transportation and infrastructure perspective, it looks like there are some great ideas that could have a lasting impact.

The project that appears to have the most immediate potential would be the I-11 freeway from Phoenix to Las Vegas with connectivity to Salt Lake City and Denver. There are very few ways to get north/south in the mountainous southwest. Though growth has stalled, when it does recover, these cities will be at the forefront once again and these kinds of connections would be greatly beneficial.

The project with the greatest potential impact appears to be the inland port in Phoenix with a connection to a deep water port in Mexico. First, the article explains that the ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach are full. Why not allow Arizona to get in on the action? In addition, higher wage jobs at a port in Mexico could help spur opportunities which would potentially help reduce the flow of those fleaing north and entering Arizona illegally.

We're not sure that the high speed rail connections throughout the west would have the same immediate impact (when was the last time some one rode a train), but at least all options are being considered.

The question does remain, how do we find the money to match the vision?

Mesa residents can follow developments in the push to approve Proposition 420 through the site’s sign-up feature that promises alerts on upcoming campaign events and breaking news.

Already, the site features information about a free youth baseball skills clinic hosted by Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame pitcher Fergie Jenkins for Mesa kids next Monday, Sept. 13 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hohokam Park.

The campaign promises more Cubs-themed events where residents can meet Cubs legends and show their support for keeping the Cubs in Mesa for at least another 30 years.

Proposition 420 will be on the November 2nd ballot in Mesa.

Focusing on opportunity over real estate

The Republic has an insightful editorial today about the need to focus on attracting opportunity for its own sake instead of attracting it to fill empty land. Mesa recently launched healthcare and education studies to see how either could be used to fill site 17 in downtown. Ultimately, the results have shown that while Mesa may be able to attract opportunity, there is no guarantee that the downtown site would be the best fit.

They go on to say that focusing on real estate is not the "most effective strategies to woo high-wage jobs Mesa's way." While we agree, sometimes real estate will have to be a factor. Mesa has among the most creative reuses in the valley with Amazing Jakes, Mekong Plaza, and AZ Country USA to name a few.

These may not fit into the "high wage jobs" category, but they do show ways that creative thinking and real estate considerations go hand in hand in creating successful ventures. Thoughtful reuse and the creative incorporation of site 17 may still be in the future for healthcare and education opportunities. They key must be, like the editorial says, a focus on attracting the jobs, not just filling the space.

While their overall premise that Mesa's pursuits of healthcare and education should be more flexibile is spot on, we don't necessarily think that they give Mesa enough credit for being creative in its approach to challenges.

Largest decline in MPS history

Mesa Public Schools saw a sharp decline in enrollment - nearly 3 times what they expected. They have not yet released the school by school analysis, but one would suspect Arizona's immigration law along with the changes Mesa Public Schools made closing schools down and shifting focus of others has likely had an impact on the decline.

With 3,300 students fewer than expected, MPS will likely have to cut $16.5 million from its budget. Now, the question remains, with the falling enrollment, will even more schools be shut down?

Cubs prefer Riverview

The Chicago Cubs have announced that they prefer the Riverview location for the site of the new stadium. Of course, no site has been selected yet, but one would guess that the proximity to the freeway and the existing infrastructure appear to be attractive when you compare it to the west valley stadiums which have failed so far to attract development.

We have been saying for almost a year that the site would be a prime location for a Spring Training facility. Now the question remains, can they get a deal done? Will Waveyard get out of the way, or do they still insist that they can get financing done?

Don't get us wrong, the Waveyard project is still a great idea on paper, but we are weighing something with potential against something that has a 50 year track record. Which should Mesa have as a priority, a waterpark struggling for financing, or an annual event that consistently makes March Mesa's highest month of revenue.

While there is still much to be decided, voters will also be faced with the decision of approving the financing for a project (no matter the location) on the ballot in November. One again, the 613 rule rears its head. Regardless of where this project ends up, we all must agree that the Cubs are critical to Mesa.

Glover upsets Linoff

In what many would consider an upset, 23 year old newcomer Christopher Glover soundly beat 67 year old Vic Linoff by a margin of nearly 60-40. Glover knocked on over 800 doors in the race and received the endorsement of Russell Pearce and other Mesa conservatives.

In all a little over 2,900 votes were cast in the District 4 race compared to the 9,000 in District 5 and the 11,000 in District 6. It was long considered that Linoff would align himself with the community folks and downtown organizations similar to Councilman Kavanaugh. Will Glover serve the conservative contrarian role? As a family friend of Kyle Jones, will he continue the same route? Or at the young age of 23, is his style yet to be determined?

West Mesa CDC has new director

Former Gilbert Mayor Cynthia Dunham will be taking over as the interim director of the West Mesa Community Development corporation. Dunham was a West Mesa resident before moving to Gilbert and serving as Mayor. She is not moving back to Mesa, and will also be keeping her job head of The Leadership Centre at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Interestingly, the article mentions that the West Mesa CDC may be considering merging with another non-profit, but it doesn't mention which one and if their focuses are aligned or not. We shall wait and see what becomes of this in the upcoming weeks.

Light rail extension design approved

Service won't start for another 6 years, but the light rail extension into Mesa took another step forward with the Feds approval of the design work. Mesa's end of line stop is currently the busiest along the line. One would guess that this trend will continue with the extended lines.

While light rail has started to become part of the regular life, the slowed economy has yet to show what kinds of economic opportunities can be realized along the line. Perhaps by 2016, the economy will have recovered and we will have a better view of if light rail will be able to reach its potential.

In the meantime, it is a good way to get to downtown sporting events and games at ASU.

The Marine One conundrum

Marine One is the presidential helicopter. Work to replace the current helicopter was started under President Bush and continued under President Obama until the costs began to skyrocket. At that point, Obama halted the replacement.

Now, it looks like work may be underway again and Boeing may be in the hunt. This could be great news for Boeing if they were able to land the program creating jobs and more economic opportunity for Mesa. On the other hand, its another Government funded program which means more taxpayer money for a project that many might find a bit excessive.

It is understandable why the Mayor and other city leaders would want to land the program. The question is, with the continuing growth of Government in the past few years and the relative unpopularity of Obama among Arizonans, will the benefits outweigh the negatives?

District 4 only competitive race

Of the three city council seats that are up, (4, 5, 6), only District 4 features a competitive match up between Vic Linoff and Christopher Glover. Higgins and Somers were both let off without a challenger, which some will take to mean that they are doing a great job, while others will consider it a case of voter apathy.

The Republic is featuring articles from both Linoff and Glover on why they would be best for the council. District 4 is the downtown Mesa district and it typically has the lowest turnout of the entire city. It will be interesting to see how much attention this race gains in the busy primary elections.

Molina is out

Just as early ballots start to hit households, David Molina, the recruited challenger to take on Rich Crandall, has decided to drop out of the race. After deciding not to run himself, Chuck Gray and fellow LD19 ultra-conservatives had drafted Molina to run. They spent the next few months attacking Crandall in Molina's name. It appears that Molina chose his business over a busy legislative race.

With Kevin Gibbons from the left last year and James Molina from the right this year, it seems that drafting candidates whose hearts aren't really in the race is a losing proposition, especially in Mesa.
